The Doral Telluride Resort and Spa, one of North America’s largest ski-spa resorts, has been sold and renamed The Peaks at Telluride.
Scheduled to reopen Dec. 15 after renovation, the $80-million resort was purchased by Westcor Resorts of Phoenix, which also owns The Boulders in Carefree, Ariz., one of the nation’s top-rated luxury resorts.
The Peaks is set high in the Rockies and offers 1,050 skiable acres of varying terrain. Winter fly fishing, dog-sled rides and snowmobiling are other cold-weather activities. There is a 42,000-square-foot spa. In the warmer months, mountain biking, llama treks,white-water rafting, horseback riding, rock climbing and hiking are among the options.
The complex, little more than a year old, was opened as a hotel and time-share resort, but slow sales were a problem from the outset and owners tried various financial remedies, according a spokeswoman. When the hotel failed to make a major payment in April, she said, its lender foreclosed, opening the way for Westcor to purchase the resort for $27 million.
The Peaks is offering introductory prices that are reminiscent of The Boulders: From Nov. 24 through April 10, room rates range from $200 to $1,750, per night, based on double occupancy. Between Nov. 24 and Dec. 17 and Jan. 2 and Feb., 12, rates include a daily lift ticket, which normally run $41 per person. The hotel also has a New Year’s package for $235 per person, per night that includes seven nights lodging, lift tickets and access to the spa.
