Barging Ahead

Participants in the Smithsonian Associates’ French waterways cruise aboard the Anacoluthe (Tours & Cruises, Jan. 21) are in for a treat but certainly no bargain.
Late August, a friend and I were enrolled in the Elderhostel barge program, “Impressionists of Normandy.” In addition to seven nights on the Anacoluthe, the trip included four nights in Rouen, with side trips to Honfleur, Etretat and Giverny, and three in Paris.
The barge was very comfortable, the food outstanding, the scenery charming, the towns visited delightful and our lecturer knowledgeable and interesting--altogether a fabulous trip. This year the 14-night program (plus travel days) will cost $3,557 from Los Angeles, including air fare, a vast saving over the 10-night Smithsonian trip that is $5,328 plus air fare.
