Re: “Traveler’s Checks: Going South?” (Sept. 29), I purchased free traveler’s checks from the Auto Club for travel to Atlanta during the Olympics. Once in Atlanta, however, I found that the bank rate for converting them to cash was $10 per $100! I have traveled throughout Western Europe and many parts of the United States and have never been charged such an outrageous fee.
Although the American Express office in downtown Atlanta charged only $2 per $100, it was not as conveniently located as the banks and was especially hard to get to because of the crowds. I am seriously rethinking the utility and cost-effectiveness of traveler’s checks for future travel.
