A couple of months ago in Kansas City, I was sitting at the bar with ug Frost, who’s a master of wine, at about 2 o’clock in morning, and we decided we’d open a 1989 Chateau Haut-Brion and an ’89 Penfolds Grange Hermitage and put them to a match. Even though we’d had a reasonable consumption of wine during the night, they were both fantastic, with the Grange being the more upfront and really sticking out with sweet fruit character and oak, and the Haut-Brion being more complex and a little more subtle, but equally great.
