A Jan. 2 article referred to Singapore as having been a fishing village 30 years ago. Although Lee Kuan Yew did wonders for Singapore, he did not start with a fishing village. Singapore was always a thriving port, and as early as 1947 the city was a lively and busy place with department stores, concert halls, nightclubs, restaurants, beautiful hotels, and saw the beginnings of modern high-rise buildings. I know, since I lived there from 1945 until 1951.
