Color Matters--or Not?

I seldom miss Susan Spano’s Her World column. The March 12 one (“For Women of Color, Rules of the Road Can by Turns Enlighten, Enrage”) was a special treat, namely her comments regarding Elaine Lee’s book “Go Girl! The Black Woman’s Book of Travel & Adventure.”
My experiences (perhaps because I’m male) as an African American who has made seven trips to Europe have been that I was usually seen as an American. The rudeness that I have encountered never left me with the feeling that it was due to my hue. A case in point: Last year in Copenhagen, my Danish wife assured me that a female server at a kiosk would have been surly to anyone.
