Re “Air travelers hit with new baggage fees,” May 22
Thousands of American Airlines employees are facing layoffs, some only a few months after being recalled from years-long furloughs. Yet The Times’ headline whines about fees for checked baggage of discounted ticket holders. I expected better.

With ever-rising fuel costs, I call the baggage fee justified. Heavy bags cost money -- in fuel and in the salaries paid for airline employees who check them. Why should passengers with normal baggage pay more for tickets to absorb the extra expense?
