Library Treasures

Thank you for featuring libraries and their treasures in your Calendar Weekend cover story (“Checking Out Libraries’ Treasures,” by Robin Rauzi, Oct. 18). Los Angeles County is indeed blessed with many wonderful and informative library collections.
I found it sadly ironic, however, that in the very same issue was an ad for the worthwhile project “Reading by 9,” reminding us that “our schools are in desperate need of books.” Certainly we should appreciate and preserve the collections at the Huntington and William Andrews Clark libraries, but it’s a well-stocked school library that makes the biggest difference in a child’s life. Until all libraries are treated equally as treasures, I’m afraid society as a whole will continue to be “in desperate need” of educated and literate citizens.
